All writers have inspiration. It might be something as simple as a song they hear on the radio, or a picture in a magazine. What we sometimes don't talk about is the research we put into the books. Let me tell you... A LOT of research goes into just one single book. Fact checking is a pain in the butt.
However, in my case, research was rather fun. I LOVE hockey. I am huge fan of the game. It's one of my favorite things to do with my husband. There is always a game playing in our house, even if the Washington Capitals have the night off.
John and I record the weekly behind the scenes shows. Correction: John records CAPS RED LINE and I record BEHIND THE B, THE WILD and whatever else showed up on my DVR. Did I mention that research is crucial? I had no idea what players did in their day to day routines. What happens if they get injured? How often do they practice? How close do they live to the rink? Do they drive or take the subway to practice?
There were so many questions!
Luckily John and I got the joy of watching the behind the scenes documentary for our favorite team this past season as they got ready for the Winter Classic. Then of course I just had to look stuff up, and figure it out.
So... here are some of my favorites and funniest. Enjoy!
In THE GIRL WITH HEARTS, Henrik Rylander is a NEW YORK RANGER. This is a behind the scenes look at the setting you'll read about in my book.
It's a well known fact that my FAVORITE player in the NHL is Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals. It's the reason why Henrik is Swedish in THE GIRL WITH HEARTS. Want a taste of what Henrik's Swedish turned American accent sounds like? Check out Nicky's caps crusin video.
Hockey players love competition, having fun and... tatoos :) Henrik's sleeve of tats via Tyler Seguin.
You can't talk hockey without talking fights. No one does it better than my boy Tom Wilson. His team mates like to call him Willie Baby because he isn't even 21 years old yet, but you don't want to mess with him. He inspired my character Austin in THE GIRL WITH HEARTS.
